King's cake

8 to 10 persons cake only $19.95

The origin of the Kings cake dates back to Roman times.  During the Saturnales Feasts, one lucky person who received a bean in their slice of cake was elected “king”.  The “King of the Feast” then had control over both masters and slaves for the remainder of the feast.  The bean elections became so popular that the tradition continued well into the Middle Ages.

Another popular celebration during the Middle Ages was the Epiphany, which is the commemoration of the night that the three kings arrived in Bethlehem bearing gifts for the newborn Jesus Christ.  In an effort to Christianize the French tradition of Fools Day, the Catholic Church moved Fools Day to coincide with the Epiphany.  From that day on the cake containing a bean was to be known as a Kings cake.

In the 1870’s the tradition of the bean was replaced by artificial charms available in a wide variety of shapes and materials.

At La Chatelaine, the Kings cake is made with layers of delicate puff pastry and filled with a rich almond paste. True to tradition, our cakes contain a charm and come complete with a crown for the soon-to-be King or Queen!
